Advice from experienced freelance web designer nomads please!

Hi guys, I've just begun freelancing as a web designer and intend to go nomad this year, but want to have a semi-reliable stream of client interest first. Aiming at small businesses/ freelancers/ startups/ individuals. I'm attending a meetup in my local area for entrepreneurs in 2 weeks, so I can meet some small business owners (word of mouth), and I've made accounts on PeoplePerHour & 99designs. Upwork isn't for me, as they make you pay just to apply for jobs, and Fiverr takes too big a cut from the commission.

Any advice welcome! Would love to hear how you first got your name out there and started generating interest. Would especially love to hear from people who take on 1-2 projects a month while travelling.
