Bhutan Launches Digital Nomad Residence Programme

Bhutan Launches Digital Nomad Residence Programme

Bhutan has officially launched its new Digital Nomad Residence Programme, announced on January 22, 2026. The initiative is being rolled out through Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), in collaboration with NomadClub and under the oversight of the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority.

Located in southern Bhutan near the Indian border, GMC is a royal initiative focused on sustainable urban development, innovation, and green technology. The city is positioned as a hub for global collaboration, and the digital nomad programme is one of its first steps toward attracting international talent.

The programme is designed for remote professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators who are genuinely aligned with Bhutan’s values around sustainability, mindful living, and long-term impact.

The residence permit is valid for 12 months and can be renewed for up to 24 months in total. Approved residents can live and travel anywhere in Bhutan, not just within Gelephu. Selection isn’t based on a strict monthly income requirement either. Instead, applications are reviewed individually, with a strong focus on professional background and overall fit with the programme’s vision.

To apply, candidates must pay an annual fee of USD 2,800 and maintain a minimum balance of USD 10,000 in TER, a gold-backed digital asset used within the GMC financial system. This balance is held through a local account with DK Bank.

The onboarding process includes an eligibility review, completion of formal documentation, payment of fees, and the issuance of official residence papers. Income earned outside Bhutan remains separate from local taxation, though applicants are encouraged to confirm details with their own tax advisors.
