In a bid to position itself as an emerging hub for remote work, El Salvador has unveiled its new Digital Nomad Visa. Designed to attract remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs, the program offers an attractive opportunity for international professionals looking for an extended stay in this Central American nation.

The visa is valid for up to two years initially, with an option to renew for an additional two years, allowing visa holders a total residency period of up to four years. The program also appeals to remote professionals with its crypto-friendly policies and tax exemptions on earnings generated outside the country.

To qualify, applicants must be engaged in remote work for companies or clients located outside El Salvador. One key requirement is demonstrating a minimum monthly income of $1,460 through bank statements or employment contracts.

In addition to financial proof, applicants need to submit:

  • A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity
  • Proof of income and employment (notarized employment or freelance contracts)
  • Medical and travel insurance documents
  • A clean criminal record certificate from the past six months
  • Additional documentation for dependents, such as marriage or birth certificates

The total application fee is approximately $2,825, which covers government fees, taxes, legal services, and document translation costs. A renewal fee of $450 applies when extending the visa for an additional two-year period.

Interested candidates can schedule an appointment at the nearest Salvadoran embassy or consulate, or apply online through authorized agencies. Applicants must gather all required documentation, with a processing time of about 45 days before a decision is made.

Visa holders are expected to focus on remote work and are not permitted to engage in local employment, although exceptions exist in cases such as specialized roles with government institutions or teaching positions.
