Slovenia rolls out a dedicated digital nomad visa

Slovenia is set to welcome remote workers with the launch of a dedicated digital nomad visa on November 21, 2025. This initiative provides a legal pathway for non-EU, non-EEA nationals who work remotely for a foreign employer or run a business outside Slovenia to reside in the country.

Key Details of the Visa

The new visa allows remote workers and their family members to live in Slovenia for up to 12 months. Although the visa is non-renewable, applicants may reapply six months after the expiration of their previous visa.

Applications can be submitted in multiple ways, either as a tourist while in Slovenia, at a Slovenian embassy or consulate, or online.

The visa specifically targets individuals who work remotely as an employee, freelancer, or business owner, given that their employer or company is established outside Slovenia. Furthermore, while the main applicant is not permitted to take up local employment, family members are allowed to work or study in Slovenia.

Why Choose Slovenia?

Digital nomads are attracted to Slovenia for several compelling reasons. The country offers stunning Alpine and Adriatic scenery, affordable living costs in comparison to neighbors like Italy and Austria, and vibrant urban centers such as Ljubljana and Maribor. Its membership in the Schengen Zone allows for easy travel across Europe.

Application Process Overview

Applicants have several options for submission:

  • Submit the application as a tourist in Slovenia, or at a Slovenian embassy or consulate.
  • Apply online with detailed instructions available on their official website.
  • Proof of working for an entity outside Slovenia is a prerequisite.

The initial visa is valid for 12 months and is not extendable, though reapplication is allowed six months after expiry.

Family members can accompany the main applicant, with some eligible to work or study in Slovenia.
