Review Summary

Penang is amazing—just the right mix of everything. You get island vibes and a dash of city energy, with solid internet, plenty of work-friendly cafés, culture, nature, and the best food around. Pro tip: The hospitals here are excellent and reasonably priced, so it’s a smart place to squeeze in any check-ups. Plus, my ClassPass app works, so workouts are covered. Another pro tip: Skip living in Georgetown. Traffic can be brutal. I base myself in Tanjung Tokong, midway between town and the beaches, for a more residential feel without losing convenience. Grab is your go-to for rides (and food). Yes, accommodation runs a bit higher than in some other Southeast Asian hotspots, but Penang feels more grounded than the usual beach-bum scene—it’s a working island, and the infrastructure proves it, even with the sand right there. Getting around is easy: a daily train reaches KL in three hours, and the airport flies you almost anywhere. What I love most is the range—within twenty minutes I can be on the beach, exploring Georgetown, or cycling through a village. I still haven’t hit all the hiking trails (work first!). Weekend must-do: Hin Bus Depot Art Market—trust me, it’s worth it.
