Review Summary

As a local Bulgarian, I can say Sofia offers a lot of practical advantages for digital nomads—plenty of coworking spaces, fast Wi-Fi, and a thriving urban environment with great cafes, restaurants, and nightlife. It’s easy to stay productive here while also enjoying everything from art galleries to mountain hikes just outside the city. However, what Sofia lacks is a strong digital nomad community. Being a large city, it’s more spread out and doesn’t have a concentrated scene or regular nomad events like you might find in smaller hotspots. If community and connection with fellow nomads is high on your priority list, I’d recommend nearby Bansko, which has a much tighter-knit, intentional nomad community and frequent events geared toward remote workers. Sofia is best suited for nomads who prefer an urban experience and independence, rather than a built-in social scene. It’s a great base with lots to do—but you may have to work a bit harder to meet like-minded people. With that said, there are quite a few expats and English-speakers in Sofia. I've recently launched a newsletter for expats collecting weekly English-friendly events and cultural tips – www.sofiaexpats.com
