Can you be a nomadic entrepreneur?

Hey Freaking Nomads,

These are some questions I’ve heard more times than I can count:

  • “Is it really possible to build something real while you’re always on the move?”
  • “Don’t you need a stable base and routine for that?”
  • “Isn’t traveling just a distraction?”

And I get it.

From the outside, the idea of launching a business while hopping between time zones, dodging unstable Wi-Fi, and never quite knowing where you’ll sleep next week… sounds like chaos.

But I want to offer a different perspective: if you think about it, as digital nomads, we are all sort of entrepreneurs.

When I first left my 9–5 in London, I didn’t set out to start a company. I started as a freelancer and my goal was simple: make enough to travel, work from anywhere, and break out of the corporate hamster wheel.

But over time, something shifted.

The more I traveled from one place to another, the more I observed different work cultures and different pain points.

I wasn’t just seeing the world, I was spotting problems. And that’s what entrepreneurs do. So, in a way, we are all entrepreneurs, don't you think?

The jump to entrepreneurship is actually more feasible as a nomad than as someone stuck at home and that rarely travel to see the world.

As a matter of fact, the idea of Freaking Nomads didn’t come from a desk. It came from actual late-night chats in guest houses in Thailand, coworking spaces in Madeira, a sketchy café in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and a sunset conversation in Cape Verde.

It came also from hearing the same frustrations over and over again:

  • “Where do I meet people?”
  • “Why don't people take us seriously as digital nomads?”
  • “Why does no platform really get us?”

So with Irene, we decided to build something.

And here’s what I learned along the way: travel doesn’t kill focus, it sharpens it.

When you only have three hours of deep work in a day because you want to have enough time in a day to explore, you get real good at knowing what actually matters.

Movement doesn’t block momentum, it fuels creativity.

New surroundings bring new energy. A change of scene often unlocked ideas I would’ve never had sitting still.

And constraints? They’re not obstacles, they’re filters. They force clarity.

Of course, although nomad entrepreneurship is not as evil as some people paint it, it’s not always easy.

There were days I couldn’t find a café with a single outlet, flights delayed a launch (horrible) or Zoom calls at 3am.

But the flipside? I’ve had some of my most productive weeks while on the road.

Because here’s the truth: entrepreneurship isn’t about comfort. It’s about resilience.

And if there’s one thing the nomad life teaches you, it’s how to keep going when things don’t go according to plan.

So yes, you can absolutely be an entrepreneur while traveling.

You can build your own thing. Launch a product. Grow a team. Change an industry. And you can do it from a beach in Sri Lanka, a flat in Mexico City, or a mountain town in Nepal.

You just have to be intentional. And you have to really want it.

The nomad dream doesn’t end at client work.

It can also be the starting point of building something bigger.

Thanks for reading 🙏

Luca

We looked at where it's considered polite to generally wear shoes indoors as a societal norm (not necessarily in their own houses, but think more of shops and public indoor spaces as well), and that's what we found out:

🧑‍💻 The Nomad Resource of the Week

This week we’re spotlighting a tool that quietly powers thousands of nomad side-projects and micro-businesses: Namecheap. It's the registrar-plus-hosting combo many nomads keep coming back to, whether it's for snagging a budget-friendly domain or rolling out a WordPress site and branded email in minutes.

Here's what it brings to the table:

  • Protects your identity – Free, lifetime domain privacy (WhoisGuard) on every new registration keeps your personal data off public records.
  • Helps you launch a site fast – EasyWP managed WordPress installs in ~90 seconds, includes a one-month free trial, and renews at just $6.88/mo—handy when you want an online HQ without server headaches.
  • You get a professional look – Private Email starts with a 60-day free trial, giving you a yourname@yourdomain inbox that survives SIM swaps and hostel Wi-Fi.
  • Keep costs low – Domains often start under $10, hosting plans under $3, and EasyWP undercuts bigger hosts by a wide margin (perfect runway pricing for bootstrapped nomads).

If you’re spinning up a new project or just need a rock-solid domain with privacy baked in, Namecheap for us is one of the most reliable, budget-friendly places to start.
