India’s First Digital Nomad Village Launches in the Himalayas

A quiet little village in the Himalayas is doing something pretty bold.
In July 2025, Yakten, a tiny spot in Sikkim’s Pakyong district, officially became India’s first Digital Nomad Village. It’s part of a new initiative called Nomad Sikkim, where the local government teamed up with a nonprofit called Sarvahitey to bring remote work and rural life together in a way that actually makes sense.
Yakten offers high-speed internet, coworking spaces, and cozy local homestays, set up specifically to welcome remote workers who want a quieter, more meaningful place to live and work.
But here’s the part that really matters: it’s not just for digital nomads. The project is designed to benefit the locals too, giving homestay owners and small businesses a steady stream of visitors outside the usual tourist rush.
The official announcement happened on July 14th, with MLA Pamin Lepcha leading the ceremony. She called it a step toward building a more sustainable, community-first model for travel and remote work.
