Familiar doesn't mean boring
Hey Freaking Nomads,
We all know the feeling – the itch to put as many miles between ourselves and our homebase as possible. New cultures, different landscapes, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones – it's a core part of the digital nomad life, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
But sometimes, the magic we seek can be found much closer than we think.
This year, for example, I decided to explore Sicily, the southernmost tip and largest island of Italy, my home country 🇮🇹. Honestly, at first, it felt a little…well, familiar. After all, I spent countless summers in Italy as a kid. But as soon as I started working remotely from Sicily, it completely transformed.
I appreciated the familiar things for aspects that I never considered and felt like visiting an entirely different place altogether.
Suddenly, the things I used to take for granted – the endless summer days bathed in Mediterranean sun, the beautiful blue water I used to jump into without thinking too much of it – became a source of pure joy after a day spent working from my laptop.
The familiar pace of life in southern Italy – slow and relaxed – turned out to be perfect for those long, productive afternoons that seemed to stretch on forever. Working from patios that once faded into the background of my childhood summers took on a whole new meaning.
Sure, there's something undeniably special about exploring far-flung corners of the globe. But Sicily reminded me that there's a unique beauty in revisiting familiar places through the lens of a digital nomad.
So, my fellow nomads, my tip for this week is to dust off an old travel dream that might be closer than you think. When making your next round of travel plans, think about revisiting a place from your past and see it with fresh eyes. You might be surprised by the hidden gem you discover, both personally and professionally.
Until next week,
Irene Lidia
