Greece Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements & Application Guide

Greece launched its Digital Nomad Visa program in 2021, giving remote workers from non-EU/EEA countries the opportunity to live in Greece legally for up to a year while continuing their jobs with a foreign employer or their own business. The visa is officially called the Greece Digital Nomad Visa and can be extended via a residence permit, allowing digital nomads to enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle for up to three years in total.

Does Greece Have a Digital Nomad Visa?

Greece offers a dedicated Digital Nomad Visa program for non-EU/EEA citizens who work remotely for foreign employers or run their own businesses. This visa lets you live in Greece legally for up to 12 months and is extendable if you wish to stay longer. It’s not a tourist visa workaround but an official mechanism for digital nomads to reside and work in the country.

Who Can Apply for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?

If you’re a remote worker from outside the EU or EEA, you may be eligible for the visa, provided you meet the financial and documentation criteria. Here's what you must meet:

• You must be a non-EU/EEA citizen
• You must work remotely for a company based outside Greece or run your own non-Greek business
• You must prove a minimum net monthly income of €3,500
• If bringing dependents, income must increase by 20% for a spouse and 15% per child
• You must have a clean criminal record
• You need valid health insurance for your entire stay

How to Apply for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa as a Digital Nomad

Applying for the Digital Nomad Visa is fairly straightforward and depends on whether you’re applying from inside or outside Greece.

Step 1: Make an appointment

If you’re abroad, contact your nearest Greek Embassy or Consulate. If you’re in Greece, apply directly to the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum before your current visa expires.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

Make sure to collect all required documents (see next section) and ensure they are officially translated into English or Greek if needed.

Step 3: Complete the application form

Fill out the official Digital Nomad Visa form provided by your consulate or online through the Ministry’s site.

Step 4: Attend an interview (if required)

Some applicants may be requested to attend an in-person interview to assess eligibility and verify documents.

Step 5: Wait for approval

Authorities typically respond within 10 days for initial validation and may take up to 30 days for final approval.

Step 6: Receive and activate your visa

Once approved, affix your visa to your passport. If already in Greece, you’ll apply for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit at the immigration office.

Documents Required for Applying for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa as a Digital Nomad

You’ll need to provide official, up-to-date documentation when applying. Some documents must be translated into Greek or English and legalized as required.

• Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
• Completed visa application form
• Proof of remote employment or business ownership outside Greece
• Bank statements or employment contracts showing at least €3,500/month net
• Health insurance covering medical expenses throughout your stay
• Clean criminal background check (issued within the last 90 days)
• Proof of accommodation in Greece (rental contract, hotel booking, etc.)
• Passport-sized photos as per the embassy's requirement

How Much Does the Greece Digital Nomad Visa Cost?

Here’s what you’ll need to budget for the application:

• €75 visa application fee
• €150 administration fee (per applicant)
• Additional €150 per family member if applying together

• Initial application evaluation: approximately 10 business days
• Total processing time (including approvals): up to 30 days
• If applying from within Greece, allow time for residence permit registration and card issuance following arrival

What If I'm Not Eligible for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa as a Digital Nomad?

If you don’t meet the requirements or wish to pursue a longer-term stay, consider these alternatives:

• Greece Golden Visa: Residency-by-investment program starting at €250,000 in real estate or €800,000 in prime areas. Grants 5 years of residency with family inclusion.
• Greece Type D National Visa: Allows stays longer than 90 days for purposes like study, employment, or research.
• Tourist Visa (Schengen): Valid for up to 90 days within any 180-day period but doesn’t permit work.

Other European countries also offer digital nomad visas, including Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Croatia.

Paying Taxes as a Digital Nomad in Greece

• If you stay less than 183 days per year, you’re not considered a Greek tax resident and don’t pay taxes locally.
• If you stay over 183 days, you may become a tax resident and must pay taxes on worldwide income.
• You can benefit from a 50% tax reduction for up to 7 years if you register as a Greek tax resident.
