Romania Digital Nomad Visa: Application and Requirements

Romania Digital Nomad Visa: Application and Requirements

Launched in 2022, Romania’s digital nomad visa allows non-EU nationals to live and work remotely from the country. The visa is designed specifically for digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and business owners with income from abroad.

This visa lets you stay for 90 days and then you can extend it for 12 months once you arrive. You can even renew it for 12 more months after that, as long as you still meet all conditions.

Who Can Apply for the Romania Digital Nomad Visa

Romania’s digital nomad visa is open to non-EU and non-EEA citizens who work remotely and earn income from outside the country.

This includes remote employees that work for non-Romanian companies, freelancers and independent contractors with foreign clients, and business owners and entrepreneurs with companies abroad.

Romania Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

To apply for Romania’s digital nomad visa, you need to meet some requirements.

First, you need a minimum monthly income of 18,000 RON or €3,700 euros, which is approximately €44,400 per year. Remember, this income has to come from foreign sources!

You need to show proof with bank statements from the last 6-12 months, employment or freelance contracts, proof of business ownership, or dividends/income from a foreign-owned business.

A valid passport with at least 6 months of validity is also necessary. As well as private health insurance covering Romania, proof of accommodation, a clean criminal record from your country, and the application form and fee.

How to Apply for Romania’s Digital Nomad Visa

The application process for Romania’s Digital Nomad Visa is pretty manageable, but there’s some preparation you need to do. Here’s the step-by-step guide:

1. Prepare your Documents

Before you apply, make sure you have all your documents ready. You may need to translate some of your documents into Romanian, and be notarized or apostilled, depending on your embassy or consulate.

2. Submit your Application

You’ll have to apply in person at a Romanian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Most embassies require you to book an appointment in advance, which could be done either online or by phone.

3. Go to your Visa Appointment

At your appointment, bring your original documents, provide biometrics if asked, pay the visa fee, and answer some questions. It’s usually straightforward.

4. Wait for Approval

Processing times vary, but many applicants hear back within a few weeks. You’ll usually receive a notification by email or phone.

5. Travel to Romania

After your visa is approved, you have 180 days to enter Romania. Once you arrive, you can begin the process of extending your visa for 12 more months.

Taxes for Digital Nomads in Romania

Romania keeps things pretty simple when it comes to taxes, but timing is important.

The country follows the 183-day rule for tax residency. That means that if you spend more than 183 days in the country in a 12-month period, you may be subject to Romanian taxes.

The tax system in Romania is simple. It uses a flat income tax rate of 10%, which is low compared to other European countries. This is why Romania is a great destination for digital nomads and remote workers.

Benefits of Living in Romania as a Digital Nomad

Romania isn’t top of mind when thinking about the best digital nomad cities, and that’s part of its appeal. It’s affordable, well-connected, and easy to settle into.

The low cost of living is one of the biggest pros. Rent, groceries, eating out, and transportation are cheaper than in Western Europe. You can live comfortably without checking your budget all the time.

Romania also has some of the fastest internet in Europe, and its cities are amazing for remote work, with coworking spaces, cafés where you can work with your laptop, and a growing community of digital nomads and expats.

Outside of work, Romania is the perfect place to live with lots of nature. You’ve got mountains, castles, forests, and countryside, all very accessible from most cities.

As a woman, one of my favorite aspects is that Romania feels safe and walkable. Getting around on foot or public transport is pretty easy.

And while Romanian is widely spoken by older generations, English is common among younger people. You can get by easily while you practice the basics.
