The joy of a nomadic Christmas

One of the most exciting aspects of being a digital nomad during the holidays is the chance to experience Christmas in new ways.

A couple of years ago, I was in New Zealand and it was like flipping the holiday on its head - sunbathing and BBQs instead of snowmen and hot cocoa! It was an unconventional holiday that started a whole tradition for me of spending Christmas at the beach.

And let’s talk about our global nomad family. Far from our relatives, we create our own wacky holiday traditions. I remember a Christmas in Koh Lanta – think 'Love Actually' meets 'The Beach'. The people in our coworking turned into a makeshift family, sharing a meal and some questionable Secret Santa gifts. It reminded me that home isn't just a place, but a feeling we can create and share.

There's also something special about spending the holidays alone, which can be a time for self-reflection and personal growth. Whether it's enjoying a quiet moment with a book or a solo walk along a serene beach, these moments allow us to reconnect with ourselves.

Despite these new experiences, it's natural to feel a sense of loneliness being away from family and long-standing traditions. If you're feeling this way, remember, you're not alone. Reach out to fellow nomads, participate in local events, or even organize a small gathering. Connection is key!
