Why I quit European summer
Hey Freaking Nomads,
If you're reading this, you're probably wondering why on earth would anyone choose to skip European summer?! After all, there's a reason everyone flocks to Europe in the warmer months. The beaches, the festivals, the long days filled with sunshine—it’s like the continent comes alive.
But as a European myself, I can't deny the truth: summer in Europe can be very stressful for a remote worker. There’s this constant pressure to be “on vacation” even when you’re juggling work deadlines. The crowds, the noise, the traffic, the soaring prices— it just adds an extra layer of stress.
Having lived through countless European summers, I started to wonder: is there a better way to embrace this season?
So, this year, I decided to break free from the European summer cycle. I packed my bags and headed to Cape Verde, a stunning archipelago off the coast of Senegal.
It’s a place that remains somewhat of a hidden gem, especially during the "low season" in August. The weather's still incredible, the beaches are pristine, and the vibe is refreshingly relaxed. Sure, there might be the occasional power cut or water shortage, but that's part of the adventure, right?
I swapped monuments and crowds for kilometers of untouched beaches and stunning African sunsets.
Working from this tropical paradise has also been incredibly productive. The laid-back atmosphere, combined with the practicalities of walkable towns and easy beach access, has been the perfect environment to focus and get things done. No more wasting energy stressing over traffic or fighting for a spot at a crowded café!
Overall, this experience has really opened my eyes to the beauty of off-season travel. There's a whole world out there waiting to be explored, offering unique experiences you won't find in the peak tourist months.
Sometimes, the best way to enjoy summer is to seek out those places that the crowds overlook.
Next time you're planning your escape, keep an eye out for those hidden gems and embrace the beauty of the off-season. You might just be surprised by what you find!
See you next time,
Irene Lidia
