Abu Dhabi boosts remote work with new employment regulations

Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) has announced new employment regulations that will take effect on April 1, 2025, which will give companies more flexibility in hiring and managing employees.

One key update is the expanded definition of "employee," which now includes remote and part-time workers. ADGM-regulated companies can hire remote employees who may be based inside or outside the UAE, with their primary workplace located outside ADGM premises. Employers will also be responsible for providing the necessary technical equipment for remote work.

Part-time work is now officially recognized, covering employees who work fewer than eight hours a day, less than five days a week, or under non-standard full-time arrangements. The probation period is capped at six months, during which employees can take leave and sick days but won’t receive sick pay.

The new regulations also introduce stronger anti-discrimination protections, explicitly banning discrimination based on sex, marital status, pregnancy, race, nationality, religion, age, or disability.

Hamad Sayah Al Mazrouei, CEO of the ADGM Registration Authority, highlighted:

“These new regulations come as we continue to expand, grow, and promote innovation in work systems. They will provide the necessary information to the business community while ensuring the protection and stability required for all parties.”

The UAE is making several moves to encourage remote work. In addition to ADGM’s new employment regulations, Dubai has recently introduced the Golden Visa for influencers and content creators, making it easier for digital professionals to live and work in the country.
