Bhutan makes visiting easier to boost its economy

Bhutan has recently introduced a series of initiatives designed to attract more global travelers while staying true to its principles of sustainable, high-value tourism. The Royal Government of Bhutan announced these measures to fuel the tourism sector, which plays a crucial role in employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, and economic growth.

In August 2023, the government reduced the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for international travelers by 50%, lowering it from USD 200 to USD 100 per person per night. This significant reduction aims to make Bhutan more accessible and appealing for travelers who are willing to invest in a unique and meaningful experience, away from crowded hotspots.

To encourage family travel, children aged 6 to 12 now enjoy a 50% discount on the SDF, paying only USD 50 per night, while children under 5 are fully exempt. These changes reflect Bhutan’s efforts to make the country more inclusive and accessible to families.

The visa process has also been streamlined with the introduction of an electronic visa (e-Visa) system. Travelers can now apply online and receive visa approval within five business days, simplifying the process significantly. The visa fee is set at USD 40 per person.

In addition to these policy changes, Bhutan has invested significantly in upgrading its tourism infrastructure. Improvements to accommodations, transportation, and tourist facilities are designed to elevate the visitor experience while preserving the country’s cultural and environmental heritage.

Commenting on the new measures, a government spokesperson stated:

"The Royal Government of Bhutan is pleased to announce additional incentives and policy measures to boost the tourism sector. This is in view of the important role of the tourism sector in generating employment; earning foreign exchange; realizing the potential for spillover benefits for ancillary industries; and in boosting overall economic growth."
