Key Takeaways

  • Extremadura is offering up to €15,000 ($16,800) to attract digital nomads.
  • The regional government has allocated €2 million ($2.24 million) for 200 remote workers.
  • This initiative hopes to boost Extremadura's economy and population growth.

In a bold move to attract remote workers, the regional government of Extremadura, a Spanish community bordering Portugal, is offering grants of up to €15,000 to digital nomads willing to relocate to the area.

This comes at a time of anti-tourism protests in many European destinations, such as the Netherlands, Greece, and even Spain, where tourists and digital nomads have been blamed for pricing out local communities.

Spain Will Pay Digital Nomads To Move To Extremadura

Due to its lowest population in Spain and an unemployment rate of 17.6%, Extremadura wants to be a base for digital nomads instead. This region is home to wild nature reserves, stunning mountain ranges, and Roman ruins, offering a high quality of life for nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

"Extremadura offers a high quality of life. It is a natural paradise with exceptional gastronomy. Attracting these high-skilled professionals with international incomes will have a very positive impact on our economy. They will boost local consumption, enrich regional talent and create significant networks and opportunities." - Guillermo Santamaría, Minister of Economy, Employment and Digital Transformation

The cost of living is attractive too, with Badajoz, a city in Extremadura, being about 30% less expensive than Madrid for public transport, utilities, and meals out, according to Numbeo.

For remote workers who obviously need a strong internet connection, Extremadura offers above-average fiber optic and mobile coverage with "93 per cent, 97 per cent in 4G mobile coverage and between 75 per cent and 80 per cent in 5G coverage", according to Guillermo Santamaría.

The capital, Mérida, is also particularly known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, adding an extra touch of ancient history to the digital nomad experience.

Extremadura Grant Structure and Requirements for Digital Nomads

The grant is structured to encourage long-term residency. An initial payment of €10,000 ($11,200) is offered to women, individuals under 30, or those relocating to towns with less than 5,000 inhabitants, while others receive €8,000 ($8,960). After two years, an additional €5,000 ($5,600) (or €4,000 ($4,480) for others) is provided for those who choose to stay.

To be eligible, applicants must be highly qualified professionals, particularly in the tech industry, capable of working completely remotely. They must commit to living in Extremadura for at least two years and should not have lived in the region in the previous six months if they're already in Spain. Both EU and non-EU nationals can apply, but non-EU applicants must already possess Spain's Digital Nomad Visa.

How to Apply for Extremadura's Digital Nomad Program

Applications are expected to open in mid-September 2024 and will remain open until all 200 spots are filled, with a minimum period of one month and a maximum of one year.

Applicants must submit their applications electronically through the Extremadura General Electronic Access Point, providing a digital certificate or electronic Spanish ID card for identification.

Necessary documents include proof of residence and work authorization. Those moving from another Spanish region must also provide social security and tax-related documents. Non-Spanish documents must be accompanied by a sworn legal translation certified by a professional.

Applicants will be notified of the decision within three months. Successful applicants must register with a local municipality within three months of approval and request grant payment within one month after that.

This initiative represents a unique opportunity for remote workers looking to experience the rich culture and natural beauty of Spain while contributing to the growth of a developing region. With only 200 spots available, interested digital nomads are advised to prepare their applications well in advance of the opening date.
