I know because I’ve been there.
I remember staring at my resignation letter, my hands trembling. I’d spent years climbing the corporate ladder, doing everything I was told would lead to success. And now, I was about to throw it all away—steady paychecks, stability, the safety of the familiar.
“What if this is a mistake?”
“What if I fail?”
“What if I regret it?”
The fear was paralyzing.
But deep down, I knew staying would cost me more than leaving ever could. That moment was one of the hardest of my life, but it wouldn’t be the last time I had to start over.
Why starting over is so scary
Starting over is one of the hardest things we face. Here’s why it feels so scary:
- It’s unpredictable. You don’t know how things will turn out, and that uncertainty can feel overwhelming.
- It challenges your identity. We often define ourselves by our careers or where we live. Starting over forces you to rewrite your story.
- It’s emotionally exhausting. Even when you’re ready for a change, letting go of the familiar is never easy.

What can be learned from starting over
Looking back, every time I’ve started over, I’ve come out stronger. Here’s what I’ve learned:
- Fear is your compass. If something scares you, it usually means it’s worth exploring. The fear isn’t a stop sign—it’s a signal that you’re onto something important.
- You don’t need all the answers. When I left my job, I didn’t have a clear plan. But taking the first step helped me figure out the rest along the way.
- Letting go opens new doors. Every time I’ve said goodbye to the familiar, it’s made room for opportunities I never imagined.
- You’re stronger than you think. Fear doesn’t go away, but neither does your ability to face it.
Starting over hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth every moment.
