Kenya joins a growing list of countries—such as ItalyThailandSouth AfricaJapanSouth KoreaCosta RicaIndonesiaTurkey, Peru, and the Cayman Islands—that have introduced digital nomad visa programs over the past year in an effort to draw more extended-stay visitors.

What is Kenya's Digital Nomad Work Permit?

The Digital Nomad Work Permit is designed to allow international remote workers to live and work in Kenya temporarily. This initiative aims to boost tourism, stimulate the local economy, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the East African nation.

President Ruto emphasized the visa's potential, stating:

"Kenya can be your home, where you and your family can experience the wonders of magical Kenya every day. All while serving clients from anywhere in the world on your digital platform".

While specific details about the visa's duration and application process are yet to be announced, the Kenyan government has hinted at potential pathways to long-term residency and citizenship for interested digital nomads.

Why visit Kenya as a Digital Nomad?

With its blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and growing digital infrastructure, Kenya is set to become a prime destination for remote workers seeking adventure and inspiration in the heart of East Africa.

This is because Kenya offers a robust infrastructure that supports a growing startup ecosystem and tech hubs, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit that inspires innovation and collaboration among remote workers.

Deborah Calmeyer, a travel expert from ROAR Africa, highlights Kenya's transformation as follows:

"Kenya has experienced a significant transformation in connectivity and digital growth in recent years, with internet speeds ranking among the best on the continent".

And as Kenya aims to increase its international tourist numbers from two million in 2023 to five million by 2027, the Kenya Digital Nomad Work Permit is poised to play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

But it's not all about internet connectivity. Kenya is also growing as a digital nomad hub. Diani Beach has, in fact, emerged as a rising community for digital nomads, thanks to Skippers Coliving's initiative. This coastal paradise has become a hotspot for remote workers, providing a supportive environment where digital nomads can work, network, and enjoy the stunning beach setting, creating a tight-knit community that many digital nomads now look forward to joining.

Other Visa Options Available for Digital Nomads in Kenya

Alongside the Digital Nomad Work Permit, Kenya has introduced other traveler-friendly initiatives:

  • A new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for transit passengers, allowing them to explore Nairobi during layovers.
  • A visa-free policy introduced in January 2024, offering 90-day stays for many nationalities, extendable for another 90 days.
